Environmental Responsibility (Phase One)
Taking care of the environment is a responsibility that we have started to feel accountable for. You might be surprised to discover that while we all need to make lifestyle changes, saving the planet doesn’t have to mean giving up the things you love. An Ecological Footprint is an indicator of human pressure on nature. It is figured by calculating the area required to produce the resources people consume, the area occupied by infrastructure, and the area of forest required for sequestering CO2 not absorbed by the ocean. NOVA Music Center has started it’s journey to reduce its ecological footprint!
To reduce our ecological footprint we first addressed energy use, the sources of the biggest impacts we humans have on our planet. Our simple and immediate ways that we reduced our carbon footprint is by being energy efficient.
Over the last few months we made a change by converting all of our light fixtures to remove the ballasts and to accept LED lights. LED lights are 80% – 90% more efficient than traditional lighting such as fluorescent and incandescent lights. 95% of the energy in LEDs is converted into light and only 5% is wasted as heat. Fluorescent lights convert 95% of energy to heat and only 5% into light!
Also worth noting is that LED lights do not contain toxic elements. Most offices currently use fluorescent strip lights which contain noxious chemicals such as mercury. This will contaminate the environment when disposed of in landfill waste. We removed those lights and have made one step to being a better citizen. More exciting environmentally conscious ideas are coming up.
